Pinched nerve
Burning, tingling, and it travels.
A "pinched nerve" usually means a nerve root in the neck or low back is irritated. The pain often shows up a long way from where the problem is.

How we find out
Before we touch anything, we check.
- 01Your storyWhere it hurts, how it started, what makes it better or worse, and the old accidents and injuries.
- 02A thorough checkChiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological testing: movement, joints, muscles, reflexes, sensation and strength.
- 03Posture picturesDigital posture pictures from the front and side, so you can see what we see.
- 04AnswersX-rays only if your check points to them, then a report of findings in plain English, before care starts.
What care involves
A plan you understand, built around you.
The first job is working out which nerve is involved and where it's being irritated. We test sensation, reflexes and strength, and look at how your neck or back moves.
Depending on what we find, care may include specific adjustments, flexion-distraction for low back nerve pain, and positions that take pressure off the nerve. We re-check the nerve signs as we go.
If we can't help, we'll tell you. No runaround, and no being kept on the books for the sake of it.
In the meantime
Three things you can do today.
Some people find raising the arm overhead eases arm pain. Note what helps and tell us.
Phones, laptops and long drives tend to aggravate nerve pain. Break them up.
A pillow that keeps your neck level with your body often helps arm symptoms.
General information only. Your chiropractor will tailor advice to you at your appointment.

How long does a pinched nerve take to settle?
It varies a lot from person to person. We'll give you our honest view after your new patient appointment, and track your progress at each visit.
Is a pinched nerve serious?
Most are not, but nerve symptoms deserve a proper check. Your new patient appointment includes full nerve testing.
Neck or back: does it matter?
Yes. Arm symptoms usually start in the neck; leg symptoms usually start in the low back. We check both if needed.
More than a sore spot
Your spine talks to your brain.
The muscles around every vertebra are packed with sensors that tell your brain where your body is and how it's moving. When a joint stops moving well, that conversation breaks down, and pain is one of the signals. That's why we check your spine and nerves, not just where it hurts.
Studies have measured changes in how strongly the brain can activate muscles after an adjustment, including the elbow flexors in the arm. How the nervous system processes pain is also being studied; spinal-cord pain-inhibition mechanisms are the best supported so far.
