SI joint & pelvic pain
Low down, one side, right on the dimple.
The sacroiliac (SI) joints connect your spine to your pelvis. When they're irritated, the pain sits low in the back, often on one side, and can spread into the buttock and groin.

- Getting out of the car hurts
Common causes
Where it often comes from.
- Falls onto the bottom or a jarring step

Often it's a mix. Finding your mix is what your first appointment is for.
How we find out
Before we touch anything, we check.
- 01Your storyWhere it hurts, how it started, what makes it better or worse, and the old accidents and injuries.
- 02A thorough checkChiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological testing: movement, joints, muscles, reflexes, sensation and strength.
- 03Posture picturesDigital posture pictures from the front and side, so you can see what we see.
- 04AnswersX-rays only if your check points to them, then a report of findings in plain English, before care starts.
What care involves
A plan you understand, built around you.
We test how your pelvis moves and loads, and check your low back and hips, which often play a part.
Care may include specific adjustments to the pelvis and low back, and exercises to strengthen the muscles that stabilise the pelvis.
If we can't help, we'll tell you. No runaround, and no being kept on the books for the sake of it.
In the meantime
Three things you can do today.
Getting in and out of the car or bed with knees together eases SI strain.
Carry bags and kids on alternate sides.
Take stairs one at a time while it's sore.
General information only. Your chiropractor will tailor advice to you at your appointment.
How it works
Three steps. No guesswork.

What is the SI joint?
The joint between the base of your spine (the sacrum) and your pelvis, one on each side.
Is SI joint pain common in pregnancy?
Yes. Pregnancy hormones and changing posture often load these joints. See our pregnancy page.
Can SI pain cause leg pain?
It can refer pain into the buttock and thigh. We check the nerves too, to rule out sciatica.
More than a sore spot
Your spine talks to your brain.
The muscles around every vertebra are packed with sensors that tell your brain where your body is and how it's moving. When a joint stops moving well, that conversation breaks down, and pain is one of the signals. That's why we check your spine and nerves, not just where it hurts.
After an adjustment, one study measured a 19% rise in ankle muscle strength, with the brain recruiting more high-threshold motor units. Small and short-term, but a clear reminder that pelvic and leg control runs through the nervous system.
