Tech neck
Your head weighs more than you think.
Tech neck is the neck and upper back strain that comes from hours looking down at phones and laptops. The further your head drifts forward, the harder your neck works to hold it up.

How we find out
Before we touch anything, we check.
- 01Your storyWhere it hurts, how it started, what makes it better or worse, and the old accidents and injuries.
- 02A thorough checkChiropractic, orthopaedic and neurological testing: movement, joints, muscles, reflexes, sensation and strength.
- 03Posture picturesDigital posture pictures from the front and side, so you can see what we see.
- 04AnswersX-rays only if your check points to them, then a report of findings in plain English, before care starts.
What care involves
A plan you understand, built around you.
We check your neck and upper back, take posture pictures so you can see your head position, and test the nerves into the arms.
Care may include adjustments to the neck and upper back, exercises to strengthen the deep neck muscles, and changes to your desk, phone and sleep habits.
If we can't help, we'll tell you. No runaround, and no being kept on the books for the sake of it.
In the meantime
Three things you can do today.
Hold your phone at eye level rather than looking down at it.
Gently draw your chin back, hold for five seconds, repeat ten times, a few times a day.
Look up and away every 20 minutes.
General information only. Your chiropractor will tailor advice to you at your appointment.

What is tech neck?
Neck and upper back strain from looking down at devices for long periods.
Can a "neck hump" go away?
It depends on what it's made of and how long it's been there. We'll assess it and give you an honest view.
Is it just a young person problem?
Not at all. Anyone who spends hours on a laptop or phone can develop it.
More than a sore spot
Your spine talks to your brain.
The muscles around every vertebra are packed with sensors that tell your brain where your body is and how it's moving. When a joint stops moving well, that conversation breaks down, and pain is one of the signals. That's why we check your spine and nerves, not just where it hurts.
Hours of holding your head forward change the information your neck muscles send to your brain. In a small trial of people with mild neck pain, 8 weeks of chiropractic care normalised the cervico-ocular reflex, which helps keep your eyes steady as you move.
